Leadership Quote 8

The true test of a great leader is what they leave behind; not in achievements, awards or structures, but people. Developing the leaders beneath them is the most important role any leader can have.

Leadership Quote 7: Lewis Lapham - Traits of Character

Leadership Quote 7

Management training and leadership experts often ask leaders to 'lead by example' with their staff. That first implies that leaders must do what they want their people to do, but it is much more than that.

Layham gets to the core of the issue of being a leader - it is more than in action that a leader must lead by example, it is in moral areas as well. Leadership Quote 2 from Peter Drucker suggested that 'management is doing things right, and leadership is doing the right things'. Layham is focussing on the same point.

The modern leader is bombarded with some many forms of information, it is easy for the decision not to be black and white, but one of many of shades of grey. In this environment, the leader must be able to not only articulate what needs to be done, but why. It is the why that makes all the difference  - for leaders are judged not only on what they do but why they do it.

Leadership Quote 6

Leadership is often about balance, and this quote nails it on the head.

Most new leaders want to impress their staff and Managers alike by tackling anything and everything they can - impressive to start with but tiring for all over time. The good managers and leaders learn to delegate, and the better few learn to pick good people (men or women - the quote is a little dated).

In fact, the very good learn to pick people not in their image - why recruit skills that the team already has (in you)? In my opinion, the best executives pick good people that compliment and challenge their own skills rather than replicate it.

Harder still is letting good people get on and do their job.

Do you let your people get on with their job.

How would you rate yourself in meeting these two criteria. Out of 10, how well have you picked (or trained) your staff? How much of a meddler are you?

We would love to hear your opinions.
